“The Boy and the Heron,” also known as “How Do You Live?”, is based on a novel that was published in 1937, taking viewers on a journey through fantasy and imagination. Studio Ghibli broke the news in 2020 by announcing that the master Miyazaki would return for one last film. A little over a year later, the legendary filmmaker himself shared his reason: he simply “wanted to do it,” breaking his retirement for the sake of this creative passion.

The film has embraced a unique marketing strategy, revealing only two captivating posters that pay homage to Japanese art. And if that wasn’t enough, a haunting heron with teeth has joined the visual ensemble, leaving fans’ imagination running wild.
Four exquisitely detailed images surfaced on Twitter courtesy of Fandango, leaving movie enthusiasts astonished. Studio Ghibli has chosen to keep the mystery alive, refraining from trailers or promotional teasers, except for a poster released in December.
These images evoke the distinctive magic of Studio Ghibli and Miyazaki, summoning memories of “Castle in the Sky” and “Spirited Away.” They immerse us in a mystical, dazzling world, ready to be explored and discovered.

While the images lack explicit descriptions, they convey profound emotions: a tearful farewell from a young person, a sick child flanked by their “father” and grandmother, and an elderly figure take center stage in these snapshots. All signs point to a heartwarming story about a child and their father, survivors of the tragic Hiroshima bombing.
As if a wink from fate, eight additional images have been unveiled, four of them directly from Studio Ghibli and the others from the premiere booklet. This ambivalent strategy continues to build suspense around the film, leaving fans yearning for more as they eagerly anticipate the next chapter of Miyazaki’s magic.
